THINK Digital Futures

Year 10 - Elective

Length of Course: Full Year
Department: Science and IT
Head of Department: Mrs Carina Jansen
Year Available: 2024

Analytical thinking and practical problem solving are important skills for all areas of learning. Developing creativity and problem-solving skills across a broad range of digital platforms and topics, broadens students' ability to THINK about their own learning in their digital futures.

Curriculum focus

THINK Digital Futures is a year long subject which will cover a variety of design thinking and technology themes. THINK Digital Futures will promote links to VCE Applied Computing and Systems Engineering and provide students with an insight into these subject areas. THINK Digital Futures will provide a range of cross-curricular learning across Information Technology, Digital Design, Textiles, and Design Technology.

Using basic knowledge of systems engineering such as circuits, switches and conductors, students will use Tinkercad to explore how to create a circuit board, then taking their skills further students will design a prototype using Arduino.

Students will also apply their coding skills across a range of tasks using languages such as Python and Java. Through self-paced online modules students will advance their proficiency in computational thinking.

Wearables and e-textiles bring together information technology, and textiles to make breakthrough cutting edge fashion. Students will explore the concept of intelligent fashion and use products such as LilyPad to create their own unique prototype.

Sustainability is the key to our future. During this unit students will undertake a range of projects implementing the “design thinking process”. These projects will encourage students to create data driven solutions that address real world problems, with a particular focus on sustainability.

Investigating

Explain how solutions for present day situational issues and problems are currently satisfied and conceptualised with a range of design and product solutions.

Designing

Prepare a design brief that reveals how a range of materials could present a practical design and product solution. Consider the positives and negatives that may eventuate.

Producing

Construct, using a carefully considered range of materials, to produce a working model solution. Prepare and produce projects, prototypes, models and/or garments to suit the need of the problem.

Evaluating

Prepare a report that documents the relative levels and degrees of success of the model. Obtain feedback from a range of perspectives and consider this in light of the initial investigation and design brief.

Assessment

Assessment tasks include:

  • Systems Engineering Project

  • Coding Projects

  • Digital Art and Design in the 21st Century Project

  • Design and Technology for a Sustainable Future

  • End of semester examination
