English

Year 9 - Core

Length of Course: Full Year
Department: English
Head of Department: Mrs Catherine Newett
Year Available: 2024

Throughout the year, students will engage with a range of contemporary and classic texts. These will take many different forms including a novel, short stories and a film. Students enhance their English skills through creative writing and text response essays. Students also develop their understanding of persuasive techniques in written, visual and aural texts. They will have an opporunity to analyse persuasive texts and produce one of their own, which is presented to an audience of their peers. At the end of each semester, students complete a written examination which allows them to demonstrate their ability to write in timed conditions - important skills required for the VCE studies in the future.

Curriculum focus

In English students will develop their speaking, reading, writing and language skills.

Students will practice various styles of writing and be guided towards language use that is appropriate to a content, purpose and audience and which uses the conventions of grammar, syntax, punctuation and spelling.

Students will be particularly encouraged to practice the tasks of drafting and editing their own work, using their laptops where appropriate in this process.

The language and structure of argument will be introduced. Discussion of key terms and concepts and practice in presenting their own arguments will be included.

Assessment

Assessment is continuous.

Formal assessment tasks include:

  • producing a personal reflective piece written as a creative response

  • analysing the features of selected passages from a text
