Literature

Year 10 - Elective

Length of Course: Semester
Department: English
Head of Department: Mrs Catherine Newett
Year Available: 2024

We've taken the most popular aspects of VCE Literature and modified them and created two exciting semester courses aimed at Year 10. The Literature courses will suit students who enjoy reading and discussing books, and individuals who have a desire to explore literature in its varied forms. It can also be an effective way to enhance your ability to write analytically and creatively by undertaking detailed studies of texts.

Students have the opportunity to study both classic and contemporary texts through novels, short stories and film.

These courses are designed for all students, not just those that feel that English is their best or favourite subject.

Curriculum focus

Students have some flexibility in choosing Literature at this level – they may elect to complete either a semester or a full year course. Students will study texts from two different genres.

Literature - Power and Gender

Literature - Sci-fi and Dystopia

Both courses include students reading a novel and then comparing it to the modern adaptation or transformation. This encourages students to consider aspects such as what is added and omitted, as well as which elements of the story have greater focus. As a result, students engage with how meaning changes with the text type alters.

Students will also study a collection of short stories. In doing so, students will learn how to analyse specific passages in a text in essay form as well as have an opportunity to write creatively in response to the text.

Self-guided reading will also form part of the curriculum. This takes the form of 'book clubs' that culminate in oral presentations to the class. This is may be completed individually or in small groups depending on the class size.

Assessment

Assessment is continuous.

Formal assessment tasks include:

  • Producing an analytical response to passages within a text.

  • Producing a creative response to text.

  • Producing an essay which analysing how a written text has been adapted for a modern audience in film.

  • Producing an oral presentation discussing aspects of a text.

Students will also complete a written examination at the end of Semesters 1 and Semester 2
