Year 12 - Elective

Length of Course: Full Year
Department: Science and IT
Head of Department: Mrs Carina Jansen
Year Available: 2024

VCE Data Analytics is for students who are interested in technology and the way that it impacts on aspects of our lives; from social and personal impacts through to impacts on our professional lives and future careers.

There are four key concepts underpinning this four-unit VCE course; digital systems, data and information, approaches to problem solving, and interactions and impact.

Curriculum focus

Unit 3

Students are exposed to large data repositories and undertake a range of methods by which they extract, cleanse and manipulate that data in order for it to become meaningful information. Considerations are investigated and examined as to what comprises the integrity of the data and how this can be enhanced or compromised. Data is then displayed using a range of animated visualisation software packages.

Students also pose a structured question into a topic of personal interest and then gather data in order to develop a response to that question. This forms the first part of the SAT folio.

Unit 4

The second part of the SAT (school assessed task) folio is undertaken in unit 4 whereby students address a range of ways that the findings of their research might be displayed for an audience. Students investigate the use of a range of web authoring software packages as well as multi media software editing packages that can be used in the preparation of information to be displayed on a web site.

The final unit of study addresses the very real issue of cyber security. Students learn about the way in which criminals perpetuate online scams and how this is countered by modern security methods.
