Year 9 - Core

Length of Course: Full Year
Department: Mathematics
Head of Department: Mr Dave Campbell
Year Available: 2024

In Year 9 students develop their proficiency in mathematics based on the areas of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Reasoning, and Statistics and Probability. The course is based on the Victorian Curriculum course description.

Curriculum focus

At Year 9 students begin in Core Mathematics. At the conclusion of Term One, all year 9 students take a competency test. In conjunction with academic achievement and staff recommendation, the results of this test determine the most appropriate level of study in Mathematics for terms two to four. From term two students are grouped into Advanced Mathematics, Core Mathematics or Mathematics Enrichment classes based on academic achievement and staff recommendation.

CAS calculators are used to investigate the mathematics studied. There is an emphasis on recognising whether pen-and-paper or technology-based strategies are appropriate in various situations.

Core Mathematics

This course develops a rounded understanding of mathematical skills and knowledge at the Year 9 level. It is designed to cover content from the Year 9 Victorian Curriculum. Differentiated learning is provided at both class and student level, to ensure all students in the subject are catered for. Learning Enrichment staff join class teachers to assist appropriate students in a modified delivery and pace of the course. Students in Core Mathematics will still be able to access all VCE Mathematics subjects as part of their VCE program including Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics.

Topics studied include:

Semester 1: Algebra and Linear Equations, Trigonometry, Linear Relations and Graphs, Probability.

Semester 2: Statistics, Indices, Financial Maths, Quadratic Algebra and Graphs

Advanced Mathematics

This course develops strong mathematical thinking and skills suitable for Year 10 Advanced Mathematics which includes Unit 1 Maths Methods. It covers content from Year 10 and 10A Victorian Curriculum. As mentioned above students are selected for this class based on academic achievement and on the recommendation of staff. A good understanding of Algebra and strong problem-solving skills are recommended for students wishing to be consider for this course.

Topics studied include:

Semester 1: Linear Equations and Functions, Trigonometry, Quadratic Algebra, Probability

Semester 2: Indices and Surds, Statistics, Quadratic and other Graphs, Polynomials

Mathematics Enrichment

This course develops a rounded understanding of mathematical skills and knowledge at the Year 9 level. It is designed to cover content from the Year 9 Victorian Curriculum with a modified delivery and pace of the course to provide students with additional support. Differentiated learning is provided at both class and student level, to ensure all students in the subject are catered for.

Topics studied include:

Semester 1: Algebra and Linear Equations, Trigonometry, Linear Relations and Graphs, Probability.

Semester 2: Statistics, Indices, Financial Maths, Quadratic Algebra and Graphs
