French

Year 9 - Elective

Length of Course: Full Year
Department: Languages
Head of Department: Mrs Frederique Tonkin
Year Available: 2024

Learning languages broadens students’ horizons about the personal, social, cultural and employment opportunities that are available in an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world. Through the study of French, students acquire communication skills, develop understanding about the role of language and culture in communication and reflect on language use and language learning to apply them in other learning contexts. They strengthen their literacy and analytical skills as well.

Curriculum focus

In Year 9, students continue to consolidate their acquisition of vocabulary and basic grammar. The content is taught in French, thanks to the use of AIM (Accelerative Integrated Methodology) and the emphasis of communicative language. This immersion situation develops their listening and speaking skills while still attending to their reading and writing skills. Other than the completion of the AIM story, students explore topics such as friends and family, leisure activities, sports, school, and they also gain cultural information about Paris, France and French-speaking countries.

Assessment

The following areas of study are assessed:

  • reading comprehension - this includes a variety of question types on written material related to the topics
  • written expression - this requires students to write texts related to the topics
  • listening comprehension - this requires a variety of written or spoken answers on aural material related to the topics
  • spoken expression - this requires students to engage in a number of spoken interactions of different styles mostly based on the topics as well as based on their own world and experiences.

There are also Semester 1 and 2 examinations.
