Year 10 - Core

Length of Course: Full Year
Department: Mathematics
Head of Department: Mr Dave Campbell
Year Available: 2024

In Year 10 students continue to develop their proficiency in mathematics based on the areas of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Reasoning, and Statistics and Probability. The course is based on the Victorian Curriculum Year 10 and 10A course descriptions.

Classes are grouped into four levels: Advanced, Pre-Methods, General and Foundation which recognise varying abilities and pathways. CAS calculators are an integral resource and proficiency in their use is important as it will continue to be used in all VCE courses.

Curriculum focus

Advanced

This course develops strong mathematical thinking and skills suitable for VCE Specialist Mathematics and Mathematical Methods. It is designed to cover content from Unit 1 Mathematical Methods and introduce the knowledge and skills needed for Specialist Mathematics. Students are selected for this class based on the recommendation of staff.

Topics studied include:

Semester 1: Graphs and Functions, Polynomials, Probability, Circular Functions, Rates of Change

Semester 2: Exponential and Logarithmic Functions, Differential Calculus, Integration, Probability Distributions

Pre-Methods

Pre-Methods classes will complete the Year 10 and 10A Australian Curriculum. This course is designed to prepare students to study Units 1 and 2 of Mathematical Methods in Year 11.

Topics studied include:

Semester 1: Linear Equations & Functions, Indices & Surds, Quadratic Algebra

Semester 2: Trigonometry, Statistics, Quadratic & other Graphs, Polynomials

General

General classes will complete the Year 10 Australian Curriculum materials. This course is designed to prepare students to study Units 1 and 2 of General Mathematics in Year 11.

Topics studied include:

Semester 1: Algebra, Measurement, Statistics, Indices

Semester 2: Linear Graphs, Matrices, Trigonometry, Recurrence Relations

Foundation Mathematics (Units 1 and 2)

A small group of students undertake the VCE Foundation Mathematics Course in Year 10. This course provides for the continuing mathematical development of students who need a basis of mathematical skills to support their other studies. In 2024, it is designed as a terminating course for students who are not likely to undertake any Mathematics Units 3 and 4 studies in Year 12 although students may experience this as a bridging course to VCE General Mathematics (Units 1 and 2) in Year 11. This course has a strong emphasis on using mathematics in practical contexts relating to everyday life, recreation, work and study. The five areas are 'Algebra, number and structure', 'Data analysis, probability and statistics', 'Discrete mathematics' and 'Space and measurement'.

Topics studied include:

Semester 1: Number, Algebra, Statistics

Semester 2: Finance and Money, Measurement

Student participation in this course is decided in negotiation with parents.

Assessment

Students will demonstrate understanding through a variety of tasks, as each topic is studied. These could include tests, assignments, investigations, projects, worksheets, group scenarios and activities through which they receive feedback, comments and formal grades.
