English, English Additional Language

Year 11 - Core

Length of Course: Full Year
Department: English
Head of Department: Mrs Catherine Newett
Year Available: 2024

VCE English focuses on how English language is used to create meaning in written, spoken and multimodal texts of varying complexity. Literary texts selected for study are drawn from the past and present, from Australia and from other cultures. Other texts are selected for analysis and presentation of argument. The study is intended to meet the needs of students with a wide range of expectations and aspirations, including those for whom English is an additional language. English and EAL aim to develop competence in the understanding and use of English for a variety of purposes. These studies emphasise the integration of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking and encourage students’ language development and confidence in language skills and understanding.

All students will be required to undertake four units of English studies as part of their VCE program.

Curriculum focus

Subject to Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) guidelines, the College will determine the texts used in Units 1 and 2 English and EAL.

Students will read and respond to a variety of texts, analyse the use of persuasive language, write for a range of different purposes and audiences, and use and respond to oral language in different contexts.

In Unit 1, students are required to demonstrate two outcomes. These outcomes involve writing a personal response to a set text and writing two student-centred texts. Additionally, students will write a description of the writing process when creating their own pieces.

EAL students will also need to write a note-form summary of ideas within a set text and annotate their student-centred texts rather than writing a description of the writing process.

In Unit 2, students are required to demonstrate two outcomes. These outcomes involve writing an analytical response to a set text, an analysis of the use of argument and persuasive features in text(s) and an oral presentation that presents a point of view.

EAL students will also create a note-form summary of key arguments and supporting arguments in persuasive text(s).

Assessment

Formal assessment tasks include:

Unit 1

  • A personal response to a selected text which includes a description of the writing process.

  • Two student-centred texts.

Unit 2

  • An analytical essay which examines how persuasive language and argument is used in written and visual texts to position the audience.

  • An analytical essay in response to a set text.

  • An oral presentation that presents a point of view.

At the end of each semester, students will complete a written examination.
