Year 10 - Core

Length of Course: Full Year
Department: Library
Head of Department: Ms Heather Green
Year Available: 2024

Students in Year 10 participate in Library classes run by Teacher-librarians one lesson per fortnight.

As students move through Year 10 many commence VCE courses and find that they need to develop higher order reading, research and study skills.

The Library program entitled Read, Responsibility, Revise, Research and Reference aims to cater for this whilst encouraging a love of recreational reading.

Curriculum focus

Read and Responsibility

During Term 1, students develop their reading routines and an understanding of their academic responsibilities. Topics covered include

  • what is academic integrity?

  • plagiarism

  • ethical scholarship.

Remember

In Term 2, the focus shifts to effective study techniques whilst still developing reading routines.

Topics covered include:

  • reading, paraphrasing and summary skills

  • time management and avoiding procrastination

  • using cram cards

  • avoiding mind blanks and exam preparation.

Research

During Terms 3 and 4, students develop research and inquiry skills to better assist them as they move into VCE. Students are introduced to

  • alternatives to Google including more advanced databases;

  • appropriate referencing and creating bibliographies;

  • plagiarism and copyright; and

  • project planning.

Assessment

Students submit their work at the conclusion of each lesson and are assessed on the skills they have acquired.
