At Year 9, the Science Course incorporates elements of the Australian Curriculum. Science has three interrelated strands: Science Knowledge, Science as a Human Endeavour and Science Enquiry Skills.

Specific units of study include Biology, Psychology, Physics, Environmental Science and Chemistry.

Curriculum focus

In Year 9, students will:

  • explore the role of the nervous and endocrine systems in controlling and coordinating the functions of the body

  • study the brain and perception including processing of information.

  • use models of energy transfer to explain phenomena including light, sound and electricity

  • understand the role of the immune system in protecting the body from infections

  • learn how the living and non-living components interact in sustainable ecosystems; including the impact of human activity

  • develop their skills in planning, undertaking and reporting on scientific investigations

  • explain chemical processes in terms of atoms and energy transfers and describe examples of important chemical reactions

Assessment

A student’s level of performance is continually assessed over the year using a combination of

  • assignment work

  • experimental investigations and reports

  • topic quizzes and tests

  • end-of-semester examination
