VCE VET CUA30920 Certificate III in Music

This VCE subject is a hands-on practical study for those students who love making music. Whilst it is a continuation of the course started in Year 11, students are able to undertake this as a Year 12 subject that will contribute to their study score. Please note, if only one year has been completed (either Year 11 or Year 12), students will not be eligible for the Certificate III in Music. The subject is delivered face to face internally by the College music staff, within normal timetabled classes (i.e., 8 periods per two-week cycle). However, the course is auspiced externally through our partnership with a Registered Training Organisation called “COSAMP” (RTO No 41549). There is no additional charge for students selecting this subject.

Aims

  • provide participants with knowledge and skill development for the achievement of competence to enhance their employment prospects within the music industry

  • enable successful participants to gain an additional recognised certificate at the end of Year 12 (only if Year 11 has also been completed), whilst also contributing to a student’s required number of timetabled VCE studies

  • provide participants with a diverse range of choices leading to vocational paths directed to general and more specific areas of expertise in the music industry- e.g. in production, management, sound engineering, performance.

Entry Requirements

VCE VET CUA30920 Certificate III in Music is a two-year study where generally, students commence the course in Year 11 and finish it in Year 12. Students must have a passion, joy, interest in music. They are required to undertake instrumental or vocal lessons, either at the College or externally whilst enrolled in this subject. Whilst it is not mandatory, it is highly recommended that students have completed at least 2 years of Music during Years 9, 10 or 11.

Curriculum focus

There are 5 units of competence that must be completed:

  • develop technical skills in for musical performance

  • prepare for musical performances

  • develop and perform musical improvisation

  • develop and apply stagecraft techniques

  • perform music as part of a group or as a soloist

Assessment

In Year 12, to be eligible for a Study Score, students must:

  • achieve all the units of competency designated as the Unit 3 – 4 in the same enrolment year

  • be assessed in accordance with the tools and procedures specified by the VCAA.

The coursework score will contribute 50% to the student’s final Study Score and will be reported on the student’s Statement of Results as a letter grade. This includes class work incorporating written reflections, practice journals, investigations, written performance preparation and observation checklists for performance.

In addition, there is an individual or group performance examination, based on the underpinning knowledge and skills in the units of competence in the 3 and 4 Sequence, in Term 4. This is conducted under examination conditions and assessed by a panel of assessors appointed by the VCAA. The examination score obtained will contribute the remaining 50% to the student’s final Study Score and will also be reported as a letter grade.

Student training and wellbeing support services that are available

Training support will be provided through face-to-face timetabled lessons as referred to above and resources will be provided as referred to below.

Instrumental Music Lesson Assistance

Students undertaking VCE VET Music are entitled to one free 45-minute instrumental music lesson each week during school time up to their performance examination early in Term 4. The Geelong College is only able to support payments to members of the College music or College instrumental staff and these lessons are only to be conducted on our premises.

VCE VET Unit Entitlement

The VCE VET CUA30920 Certificate III in Music program is designated a Group A study. The CUA30920 Certificate III in Music provides a Unit 3 – 4 sequence for satisfactory completion purposes. Students successfully completing CUA30920, Certificate III in Music, may be eligible for recognition of up to three units at Units 1 and 2 level and a Units 3 and 4 sequence.

AQF Certified Documentation

Only upon successful completion of assessment requirements, will learners be issued with AQF certified documentation of testamurs, statements of attainment and records of results.

Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)

Students wishing to receive an ATAR contribution for VCE VET, CUA30920 Certificate III in Music must undertake Scored Assessment for the purpose of achieving a Study Score. This consists of coursework and an end of year performance examination, undertaken either as a soloist or as a member of a group (guidelines exist for the composition of groups). This Study Score can contribute directly to the primary four or as a fifth or sixth study.

Key Resource

For each area of the course, we will be using the training support materials produced by our auspicing partners, COSAMP the national industry peak organisation, which are industry-focused and relevant to current industry practice. They will include Training Plans and a specially designed Student Training Record Book. Students will have access to the well-equipped facilities of the Keith Humble Centre for Music and the Performing Arts, including rehearsal spaces and technology rooms. A range of texts and audio-visual material is accessible.

Although students will be expected to own their own musical instrument(s), amplifiers and other sound-reinforcing equipment will be supplied by the School.
