It is also possible for a Year 11 student to take this course for only 1 year where it can help to make up the required number of Year 11 studies. However, completing this course only at Year 11 will not satisfy requirements for the Certificate III.

This course is delivered internally, face to face, by our College music staff within normal timetabled classes (i.e., 7 periods per two-week cycle). However, the course is auspiced externally through our partnership with a Registered Training Organisation called “COSAMP” (RTO No 41549). There is no additional charge for students selecting this subject (other than costs for those also taking private voice or instrument music classes).

Aims

  • provide participants with knowledge and skill development for the achievement of competence to enhance their employment prospects within the music industry

  • enable successful participants to gain an additional recognised certificate at the end of Year 12, whilst also contributing to a student’s required number of timetabled VCE studies

  • provide participants with a diverse range of choices leading to vocational paths directed to general and more specific areas of expertise in the music industry- e.g. in production, management, sound engineering, performance.

Entry Requirements

At Year 11, students undertaking VCE VETCUA30920 Certificate III in Music, must have a passion, joy, and interest in music. Students are required to undertake instrumental or vocal lessons, either at the College or externally whilst enrolled in this subject. It is recommended that students have completed at least one year of Year 9 or Year 10 Music.

Curriculum focus

There are 6 units of competence that must be completed:

  • implement copyright arrangements

  • work effectively in the music industry

  • plan a career in the creative arts industry

  • create simple musical compositions

  • write song lyrics

  • make music demos

Please note that students who only complete first year VET Music, will obtain credit for the units of competency achieved. They will not gain their full VET certificate unless at a later date, they complete Year 2 of this certificate.

Assessment

For Year 11 VET music students, there is ongoing assessment throughout the year involving the completion of a set of three tasks that are assessed by a minimum of two of the following task types:

  • work performance

  • work project

  • product

  • portfolio

In Year 11, students will be assessed on their demonstration of competence through written assignments, projects, practical tasks, portfolios, observation and questioning.
