Visual Communication Design: Built Environments and Objects is about exploring how designers shape physical spaces, objects, and human experience through thoughtful design. Students investigate how form, function, material choice, and sustainability influence architectural, interior, and product design outcomes. Through design thinking, research, and visual communication methods, students develop creative solutions that respond to real‑world needs while learning how designers communicate ideas clearly and effectively.
An introduction to built environments through interior and architectural‑scale design. Students explore human‑centred design by investigating spatial planning, ergonomics, and scale, developing design concepts that respond to user needs through annotated visualisations, plans, and layouts using both hand‑drawn and digital methods.
Exploring how material choice, construction methods, and sustainability considerations shape designed spaces and objects. Students investigate material properties and sustainable design principles, applying this knowledge through small‑scale design challenges and prototyping to understand how form supports function and responsibility in design.
Developing functional object designs grounded in real user needs. Students apply iterative design processes to refine object concepts, producing presentation drawings, models or prototypes, and written rationales that communicate design intent, usability, and effectiveness.
Each project contains practical, design development, and evaluation components. All are assessed with regular feedback and rubrics. An end‑of‑semester examination will assess students’ understanding of design thinking, visual communication methods, sustainability considerations, and their ability to respond to design briefs.
