Design and Technology

Year 10 - Elective

Length of Course: Semester
Department: Design and Creative Arts
Head of Department: Mr Kevin Jess
Year Available: 2027

Design Technology in Year 10 has an increased focus on Digital Technologies within the Product Design field of practice. Students will alternate between projects in the traditional construction workshop, and time in the collaborative online design space using Fusion 360, a 3D design modelling tool. All students will have the opportunity to experience both facets of this object design-based study, developing skills that can be carried into a VCE program in Product Design Technology.

Construction Unit

Students will build upon their understanding of the design process through investigating, designing, producing and evaluating. Students will learn to use power tools and refine their knowledge and application of traditional hand tool techniques. Emphasis is placed upon thoughtful design, construction and a high standard of finished work. Respect for equipment and safe working methods are emphasised. Students are asked to maintain a design folio that will contain design ideas and technical drawings of production work. It is an important tool for the development of ideas and assists students in their understanding of the process of design and production.

Technology Unit

Students build upon their existing knowledge of the design process and contemporary thinking skills through undertaking multiple design scenarios that encompass the use of technology to create design solutions. Expanding their design thinking (critical, creative and speculative) and problem-solving skills, students develop both virtual and physical prototypes through virtual modelling of product concepts, to then explore the use of technology including 3D printing, resin printing and laser cutting to create accurate physical representations of ideas.

Curriculum focus

Materials and Technologies

Explain how specific characteristics of materials and particular processes affect functional and aesthetic design requirements. Students gather and process information which relates to the use of materials and processes in both traditional construction and technology focussed methods.

Design Thinking

Prepare design options through undergoing a design process that specify materials and techniques with consideration for functional, aesthetic, and environmental sustainability understandings. Use digital 3D rendering tools to communicate design options and develop design proposals that include detailed specifications which clearly communicate ideas.

Creating Designed Solutions

Implement designs using appropriate techniques and equipment with precision and safety. A range of materials and production processes with specialised equipment are used to ensure quality, standards and detailed specifications are met and adhered to.

Evaluating

Prepare reports that evaluate the efficiency of processes used and the effectiveness and suitability of the products produced. Judgements of the appropriateness of innovative and functional aspects are made.
