In Year 10 students continue to develop their proficiency in mathematics based on the areas of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Reasoning, and Statistics and Probability. The course is based on the Australian Curriculum Year 10 and 10A course descriptions.
Classes are grouped into four levels: Advanced, Enhanced, Standard and Foundation which recognise varying abilities and pathways. CAS calculators are an integral resource and proficiency in their use is important as it will continue to be used in all VCE courses.
For more information please see Planning your VCE Mathematics.
This course develops strong mathematical thinking and skills suitable for VCE Specialist Mathematics and Mathematical Methods. It is designed to cover aspects of Year 10 Enhanced and Year 11 Mathematical Methods. Students are selected for this class on the recommendation of staff and negotiation with parents. Only students with an ‘A’ grade in Year 9 Enhanced will be considered.
Topics studied include:
Semester 1: Linear Equations, Quadratic Equations, Surds, Quadratic & other Graphs, Probability
Semester 2: Functions, Polynomials, Exponential and Logarithmic Functions, Circular Functions, Rates of Change
Enhanced classes will complete the Year 10 and also 10A Australian Curriculum.
Topics studied include:
Semester 1: Linear Equations & Functions, Indices & Surds, Quadratic Algebra
Semester 2: Trigonometry, Bivariate Data, Quadratic & other Graphs, Polynomials.
Standard level classes will complete the Year 10 Australian Curriculum materials.
Topics studied include:
Semester 1: Linear Equations & Functions, Univariate Data, Indices, Financial Mathematics
Semester 2: Trigonometry, Probability, Bivariate Data, Indices, Financial Maths, Measurement
A small group of students undertake the VCE Foundation Mathematics Course in Year 10. This course provides for the continuing mathematical development of students who need a basis of mathematical skills to support their other studies. It is designed as a terminating course for students who are not likely to undertake any Mathematics Units 3 and 4 studies in Year 12 although students may experience this as a bridging course to VCE General Mathematics (Units 1 and 2) in Year 11. This course has a strong emphasis on using mathematics in practical contexts relating to everyday life, recreation, work and study. The five areas are Space, Shape and Design, Patterns and Number, Data and Measurement, and Financial Mathematics.
Student participation in this course is decided in negotiation with parents.
Students will demonstrate understanding through a variety of tasks, as each topic is studied. These could include tests, assignments, investigations, projects, worksheets, group scenarios and activities through which they receive feedback, comments and formal grades.
