Students in Year 10 participate in Read Well classes run by Teacher-librarians one lesson per fortnight.
As students move through Year 10 many commence VCE courses and find that they need to develop higher order reading, research and study skills.
The Read Well program entitled Read, Responsibility, Revise, Research and Reference aims to cater for this whilst encouraging a love of recreational reading.
During Term 1, students develop their reading routines and an understanding of their academic responsibilities. Topics covered include
what is academic integrity?
plagiarism
ethical scholarship.
In Term 2, the focus shifts to effective study techniques applying relevant "brain hacking" ideas from Cognizance whilst still developing reading routines. Brain hacking ideas are
We remember only what we pay attention to.
We think in stories.
Context (including where, how, etc, we study).
Rewriting memories.
Recall - don't put it back in, work to get it out.
Goal setting (distal, proximal/weekly/Smart) - aspire, analyse, assess/adapt, reflect.
Gaming the system.
Topics covered include
reading, paraphrasing and summary skills
time management and avoiding procrastination
using cram cards
avoiding mind blanks and exam preparation.
During Terms 3 and 4, students develop research and inquiry skills to better assist them as they move into VCE. Students are introduced to
alternatives to Google including more advanced databases;
appropriate referencing and creating bibliographies;
plagiarism and copyright; and
project planning.
Students submit their work at the conclusion of each lesson and are assessed on the skills they have acquired.
Reading logs may also be maintained to monitor student reading.
