As in Year 11, VCE English/EAL Units 3 and 4 focuses on how English language is used to create meaning in written, spoken and multimodal texts of varying complexity. Literary texts selected for study are drawn from the past and present, from Australia and from other cultures. English and EAL aim to develop competence in the understanding and use of English for a variety of purposes.
All students will be required to undertake four units of English studies as part of their VCE program.
Students will read and respond to a variety of texts, analyse the use of persuasive language, write for a range of different purposes and audiences, and use and respond to oral language in different contexts.
In English students will study a total of four texts across the Units 3 and 4 sequence. In EAL students will study a total of three texts across the Units 3 and 4 sequence. The texts selected are from the approved VCAA English/EAL Text List which is published annually. Other texts are selected by teachers for analysis and presentation of argument.
In Unit 3 students read and respond to texts analytically and creatively. They will also continue to develop their analysis skills by examines how authors use persuasive language and argument in written and visual texts to position the audience. In Unit 4, by studying two set texts in detail, students compare the presentation of ideas, issues and themes. They also utilise their understanding of persuasive language and argument from Unit 3 to create an oral presentation intended to position audiences about an issue currently debated in the media.
School Assessed Coursework (SAC) contributes to 50 per cent. The level of achievement for Units 3 and 4 is also assessed by an end-of-year examination, which will contribute the other 50 per cent.
Formal assessment tasks (SACs) include:
Unit 3
An analytical interpretation of a selected text
A creative response to a different selected text.
Aa analysis and comparison of the use of argument and persuasive language in texts that present a point of view on an issue currently debated in the media.

Unit 4

Students will also complete a three hour written examination at the end of the year.
