ROBSON, Rodney Kenneth (1946-2026)
Rodney 'Chirpa' entered the
College in 1960 as a boarder in Form III C, beginning a steady progression
through the school - Form IV B (1961), Form V B (1962), Form VI (1963) and Form
VI A (1964), when he completed his studies. From the outset, he fitted
seamlessly into school life, forming enduring friendships and quickly earning a
reputation for his character as much as his ability.
A gifted and committed
sportsman, Rodney distinguished himself in both cricket and Australian Rules
football. A member of the First XI cricket team from 1961 to 1964, he earned
cricket honours in 1963 and school colours in 1962, also serving on committee
in his final years. In football, he rose from APS Second XVIII representation
in 1963 to the First XVIII in 1964, gaining football honours in 1963 and school
colours the same year. He contributed to shared football premierships in the
mid-1960s and a tied cricket premiership in 1963. His athleticism was matched
by toughness and game sense, making him a valued teammate and a respected
opponent.
Beyond sport, Rodney’s
leadership qualities were evident. He was appointed a House Prefect in his
final year, serving in Morrison House - his boarding house after earlier years in
McArthur. He also achieved his Matriculation Certificate in 1963 and was awarded
a Commonwealth Scholarship in 1964. His involvement extended to cadets, where
he held the rank of sergeant, and to tennis, where he gained house colours.
Following his school
years, Rodney maintained a deep and enduring connection with the College. He
served on the College Council from 1992 to 2012, offering practical wisdom,
good humour and a principled voice. In recognition of his service, he was
appointed a Life Governor in 2015.
Away from the College,
Rodney was widely admired for his generosity, humility and ability to connect
with people from all walks of life. Whether among lifelong friends, colleagues,
or family, he was a steady presence - loyal, thoughtful and invariably good
company. His pride in his family - his wife Bronnie, children Mark, Alister,
Penny and Craig, and his grandchildren - was central to his life.
Rodney Robson lived
fully, giving much to his school, his community and his friends. His legacy
endures in the countless lives he touched, the values he exemplified, and the
memories he leaves behind. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
