ROLAND, Michael James Heriot (1937-2026)
Michael James Heriot Roland, a much-loved member of The
Geelong College community as both student and staff member, passed away
peacefully on 27 April 2026, aged 89.
Michael’s association with the College began in 1941 when he entered Kindergarten, and concluded with his graduation from Form VI in 1955. During his school years he distinguished himself across many fields. He was a Preparatory School Prefect in 1949, captained the U14B cricket team, and won consecutive Under 14 and Under 15 swimming championships. A talented violinist and committed all-rounder, he also served as a Cadet Under Officer and represented the College in senior cricket.
Though he once considered a career in medicine, Michael’s passion for literature and the performing arts led him to teaching—particularly in English and Drama—where he would leave a lasting mark.
He returned to The Geelong College as a young master in
1958, beginning a long and valued association spanning three periods
(1958–1966, 1972–1977, 1989–1997). His career also included teaching and study
overseas, particularly in Durban, South Africa.
At the College, Michael held a wide variety of roles: Assistant Housemaster, Preparatory teacher, Master of Roland House and Morrison House, and teacher of English, Social Sciences and Drama. He coached sport energetically and later served as Head of English. His greatest legacy, however, lies in Drama. From its formative years in the 1970s to his role as Director of Drama (1990–1997), Michael was instrumental in shaping a vibrant and intellectually ambitious program. He encouraged students to think creatively, express themselves with confidence, and engage deeply with ideas - nurturing skills such as communication, empathy and originality that served them well beyond the classroom. His productions - including The Crucible and Amadeus - were celebrated for their depth, creativity and challenge to audiences. His direction of Freedom of the City earned the 1993 ANA Schools’ Drama Award for Best Play in Victoria.
Between his periods at Geelong College, Michael founded and led the Drama Department at Haileybury (1978–1988), building a strong culture of performance and excellence.
Beyond the classroom, he also enjoyed a successful acting career, appearing in The Castle, The Dish, Blue Heelers and Neighbours.
Michael retired in April 1997, concluding a 56-year association with the College. He will be remembered for his warmth, humour, creativity and unwavering belief in his students.
He is survived by his wife Jill and sons Chris (OGC 1980), Alistair (OGC 1981), Nicholas (OGC 1984) and Jonathan. His legacy endures in the many lives he enriched through teaching, theatre and friendship.
