APTED, Ian Ferguson (1939-2025)

Ian was enrolled at the College from 1944 to 1957, from Kinder all the way to Form VI. His father had also attended the College, Frank (OGC 1914). During his school years, Ian was involved in many aspects of school life – from sport to leadership roles. He was a keen sportsman, playing cricket and football.  He was vice captain of the U15B cricket team and captain of the U16B cricket team. In his final year, he reached the second XI cricket team and the third XVIII football team. In the latter years, he was a house monitor for Knowle House, and also part of the Library, United Nations and Pegasus committees, including roles as Pegasus editor in 1956 and 1957.  In the cadets, he reached the rank of Cadet Under Officer.

In his final year, the Pegasus featured a piece on “Noted members of the Vith [form] seen around the school.” Ian was summarised as follows:

I. Apted, “Appleneck” 
Pet Aversion: Loafers 
Ambition: to achieve 4 first-class honours 
Probable ending: selling peanuts 

Following school Ian went on to study Law at the University of Melbourne.  He married Susan and they have three children, Don (OGC 1984) Libby (OGC 1986), and Bruce (OGC 1988).  In 2006 the Apted Garden in the Geelong Western Cemetery was named in recognition of the combined sixty years of service given by Ian and his father, Frank, as Trust Members serving the Geelong community.

Ian passed away 27 September 2025, aged 86 years.
