MCARTHUR, John Gordon (1939-2025)

MCARTHUR, John Gordon (1939-2025)

Jock McArthur passed away on 15 August 2025, aged 85. Born on 9 September 1939, he was the son of Sir Gordon and Theodosia McArthur, and brother to Stewart (OGC 1951) and Alistair (OGC 1955). Jock entered the College in 1950 as a boarder. He threw himself into school life, serving in the cadets and on the House of Guilds Committee, and competing in rowing – progressing through the 6th, 4th and 3rd VIII crews – as well as Under 16B football.

After leaving school, Jock attended Cirencester College in the UK before returning to the family property, Meningoort, near Camperdown. Alongside running the property for many years, Jock built a respected amateur racing career that began in the 1960s and continued for more than six decades. As the farm transitioned away from sheep to cattle, he devoted more of his energy to training from the property’s historic stables. A capable amateur rider himself, he competed both on the flat and over jumps, including taking on the famed Grand Annual Steeplechase course at Warrnambool – a challenge that suited his grit and determination.

Well known in racing circles for his character, persistence and dry humour, Jock earned a loyal following and contributed richly to Victoria’s country racing culture.

Jock was predeceased by his wife, Joanne. He is survived by sons John (OGC 1986) and Robert (OGC 1988), and grandchildren who have also attended the College, continuing a proud family connection.
