CAMPBELL, Dr Peter Ellis (1930-2015)
Dr Peter Campbell became a well-respected pathologist working for many years at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH), Melbourne and the Victorian Institute of Forensic Pathology. A room was named at the Institute in tribute to his work there.
Peter was a day student at Geelong College enrolling on 10 February 1937 and leaving in December 1947. His entry address was 86 Maude St and he had previously attended Torquay State School. He was a member of Shannon House and the Library Committee of 1947. He studied at the University of Melbourne, gaining his MBBS in 1953 and admission as FRCPA in 1961.
In 1961, he commenced at the Royal Children’s Hospital becoming Director of Anatomical Pathology in 1975. He retired from that position in 1990, though he continued working as a consultant pathologist part-time for both the Hospital and the Institute. He had a particular interest in sudden infant death syndrome and often met the parents of children who had died exercising a profound compassion in those difficult circumstances. He authored many publications and co-edited with Peter Jones a textbook entitled ‘Tumours of Infancy and Childhood’ in 1976.
A keen skier, bird watcher and walker he was President of the RCH ski club from 1968 to 1974, and in 1963, an enthusiastic leader of their Hotham Lodge development.
He died on 27 August 2015, age 84 years.
