Lindsay Alfred Cartwright, the son of Alfred Ernest Cartwright and Edith May nee Theobold, was born at Birchip, Victoria on 6 September 1921 and attended school in Birchip.

On 8 February 1938 he was enrolled as a boarder at Geelong College where he studied until December 1940. His address at enrolment was Duncan St, Birchip. At College, he was a conspicuous sportsman becoming a member of the 1st Football XVIII in 1938 and 1939 and Team Football Captain in 1940. In 1938 he was a member of the 1st Cricket XI and in 1939 and 1940 a member of the 1st Rowing VIII. He was also a member of Calvert House, a member of the Football, Glee Club and Music Committees, a Cadet Corps Sergeant, and a School Prefect in 1940. In 1940, he was the recipient of the Dr Gus Kearney Memorial Prize.

After leaving College, he studied for an Arts Degree at Melbourne University but after completing his first year he enlisted (No. 419029) in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) on 16 June 1942. He trained at Point Cook, Somers and No. 1 WAGS Ballarat, and served at 1 Embarkation Depot, Ascot Vale, until his discharge on 10 May 1943, on the grounds that he was 'medically unfit for further service'.

According to one of his school contemporaries, while still serving, he returned to the school in service uniform, and a rather forgetful Principal gave him the reading for morning prayers, thinking he was still a School Prefect. He completed his BA at the University of Melbourne in 1948.

Pegasus reported in December 1964 that he had become engaged to Margaret Dineen of Perth, WA. In 1995, he was Minister-in-Association, Floreat Park Parish of the Uniting Church of Australia. On 4 March 1999 he celebrated the jubilee of his ordination into the Uniting Church.

Rev Cartwright, of Carramar Uniting Church Home, Morley, Western Australia and late of Carramar Retirement Village, Morley died on 6 February 2018.
