COTTON, Gary Mountford (1945-2006)
Gary Cotton, journalist, was a major contributor to the Geelong Advertiser newspaper for over twenty-five years. He died after an accident at Warrnambool.
Born at Geelong to parents Collins Mountford Cotton and Muriel he was educated at Geelong College from 1950 to 1963. In 1963, he was the stroke of the 1st Rowing VIII. After leaving school he gained a cadetship in 1964 at the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC), moving to Geelong as the ABC rounds man before starting with the Geelong Advertiser in 1970. With the exception of several years as editor with the weekly newspaper Coastal Telegraph he remained with the Advertiser, serving several years as Chief of Staff.
Following retirement, he moved to Port Fairy becoming involved in a diverse range of community activities including the Moyneyana Festival Committee, Port Fairy Folk Festival, Dryfken Replica Ship Visit, and the Port Fairy Surf Life Saving Club. His father, Collins Mountford Cotton (1914-1955) had also attended the College and similarly, was a journalist with the Geelong Advertiser.
