CUMMING, Roger Douglas (1947-2016)
Roger was enrolled at Geelong College by his father, Hector Dowling Cumming (1908-1989), OGC 1924, as a boarder on 12 February 1959. The family were then living at 'Old Jellalabad', Darlington near where Roger attended Darlington State School. Roger left College in December 1965 after earning a distinguished list of prizes and participating in a variety of sports teams. He played Tennis in the College 2nd VIII from 1963 to 1965, captaining it in 1964 and 1965. In winter he played football, with the 3rd XVIII in 1963 and the 2nd XVIII in 1964 and 1965. A member of various committees including Library, Music, Social Services, Tennis and Debating (of which he was President), he became, in 1965, both Warrinn House Captain and School Prefect. He capped these achievements in 1965 by winning the Pegasus Prize, the Music prize and the Stanley Calvert Memorial Prize for Debating. In 1964 and 1965 he demonstrated his expertise in the French Language by winning several of the Matriculation 'Alliance Francaise' awards. He was also a Cadet Under Officer.
He became a grazier on the family property 'Jellalabad' and was known as a breeder of Polwarth sheep, poultry, squabs and waterfowl. He continued his interest in music, acquired at College, throughout his life and played seven different instruments. In the community he was a member of the Camperdown Fire Brigade and its Band as well as, at one time, being the Chairman of the Darlington Cemetery Trust.
Roger was born on 29 January 1947 and died after a long illness at Merindah Lodge, Camperdown on 17 July 2016. His memorial service was held at the Noorat Presbyterian Church where former College Principal, Sir Francis Rolland had once ministered.
