EDWARDS, Kimberley (1951-2021)
Kim Edwards (OGC 1965) was a visionary infrastructure leader whose work reshaped urban transport in Australia. As the founding Chief Executive of Transurban, Edwards played a pivotal role in the development of CityLink, Melbourne’s first fully electronic toll road, setting a global benchmark for smart transport systems.
Born in Nhill in February 1951, Edwards' parents ran a shoe shop. He travelled to Geelong for his education, boarding in Morrison House at Geelong College from 1965-1968. Here Edwards met lifelong friend, Bruce Plain, and they enjoyed talking about politics and the economy.
After graduating in engineering from Monash University in 1973, Edwards sought out large-scale projects, first in Melbourne and then internationally. His time in London and Dubai exposed him to the transformative potential of private sector-led infrastructure, influencing his approach to public works. Returning to Australia with an MBA, he contributed to the Southgate development before joining the bid for CityLink - a project that would define his career.
Appointed CEO of Transurban in 1994, Edwards led the company through the design, construction, and operation of CityLink, introducing Australians to the e-TAG system and revolutionising tolling. Under his leadership, Transurban expanded into Sydney and the United States, becoming one of Australia’s largest public companies. Edwards retired in 2008, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and community-focused infrastructure.
Beyond his corporate achievements, Edwards was deeply committed to public service. He worked pro bono for the Victorian Government following the Black Saturday bushfires, and supported philanthropic and medical research initiatives, including founding a prostate cancer charity after his own diagnosis.
Kim Edwards was remembered not only as a builder of roads but as a builder of ideas - someone who saw possibilities where others saw obstacles, and who delivered lasting benefits to communities and cities.
Kim was married to Jan who supported him through all his endeavours.Kim passed away 4 March 2021 in Bangkok, aged 70 years.
