GALBRAITH, David Fairley (1951-2022)

David was enrolled at The Geelong College in 1963, starting in Form I at the Preparatory School. He completed Form VI in 1968. David came from Torquay where his parents Jean and Arthur lived along with sister Elizabeth.

During his time at the College, David often ranked high in his class, reaching fourth place in Form V. He was an academic student among the recipients of a James Boyd Scholarship then Junior Government Scholarship and Commonwealth Secondary School Scholarship. In his first year, David won the Gillespie Scripture Prize and then in 1964, won the Nancy Bonney Music Prize.

In 1967 David completed his Leaving Certificate in nine subjects and received distinction in the Latin Reading competition. He followed this in his final year with a humanities prize and matriculating with honours, passing seven subjects including 2nd in English Literature and 18th Century History. He then received a Commonwealth Tertiary Scholarship.

In his final two years at the school David also served on the Pegasus Committee, appointment sub-editor in 1968. He also served on the Music Committee in 1967.

David went on to study a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Melbourne. He obtained honours in History as well as undertaking studies in Political Science. David was a resident at Ormond College during this time and held a minor then major Residential Scholarship. He followed this by studying a Dip Ed at the University of Melbourne before heading into the classroom for a few years.

In the late 1970s, whilst studying an LLB, David commenced working in the Australian Public Service in Research/Analysis where he remained until the early 1990s. He remained a supporter of The Geelong College over the years.

David passed away 25 January 2022, aged 70 years.
