GILLETT, Robert ‘Max’ (1927-2011) '


Max' Gillett, farmer and grazier, was educated at the College from 1936 to 1942 spending time as both a boarder and a day student.

He operated his own retail produce business until 1956 before entering parliament. He first contested the Victorian parliamentary seat of Grant in 1955 before winning the seat of Geelong West in which he served from 1958 to 1964. He married on 18 March 1956 to Elizabeth Margot Simmons. He continued farming after he left parliament as a Merino stud and cereal farmer at his property at Jalna South near Anakie.

His community activities were diverse. He was secretary of the Anakie Primary Producers Union in 1945 and in 1956 its president. He was a member of the Merino Sheep Breeders’ Association, the Ballarat Agricultural and Pastoral Society, the Anakie Fire Brigade and was notable as a councillor. Life member and president of the Geelong Agricultural and Pastoral Society. He died 24 October 2011.
