GRANT, Donald Trevor, (25 April 1930 - 14 April 2011)
Donald Grant of St Kilda East, attended the College as a day student from 1941 to 1947 after having previously been at Newtown State School.
At College he was the Under 15 Athletics Champion, winning the Athol J Wilson Cup in 1944, and repeating this feat in 1945 when he was the Under 16 Athletics Champion. He was a member of the Athletics Team in 1945, the Relay Team in 1946 and the Athletics Committee in 1945 and 1947. In 1943 he had also been the Under 14 Swimming Champion. In 1947 he became a Cadet Corps Lieutenant, a School Prefect and Calvert House Captain. His twin brother, Robert Lloyd Grant (1930-1988), was also at the college from 1943 to 1945.
‘Don’ received further education at Melbourne University and completed a Trained Primary Teachers’ Certificate at Melbourne Teachers College in 1953 before beginning his teaching career at MacLeod High School in 1954 as Mathematics, Science and Sports master. Then,followed a year at Belmont and 2 years at Auburn Central School while he completed a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences. He married in 1960 and moved to Lower Plenty where his family lived for the next 30 years until their move to St Kilda. He completed his Diploma of Education at Melbourne University in 1962 and taught Mathematics and Biology at Eltham High School for over 13 years. A feature of his time there was his production of 11 seasons of Gilbert and Sullivan. During this period he also conducted the Eltham Symphony Orchestra for 4 years.
In about 1970, he moved to Maffra High School as Deputy Principal followed by 9 years as Principal of Broadmeadows High School and 5 years at Watsonia High School before retiring in 1987. In 1974 he completed a Master of Educational Administration through the University of New England. In retirement he remained busy, travelling overseas, building furniture, building a house at Moggs Creek and continuing his pursuit of musical appreciation. In 1990, he became a Civil Marriage Celebrant and proudly conducted over 1200 ceremonies. ‘Don' died on 14 April 2011.
