HEWISON, Benjamin (1875-1938)

HEWISON, Benjamin (1875-1938)

Benjamin Hewison, clergyman and missionary of the Baptist church attended the College in 1889. He was one of two sons of Lancelot Hewison and Alice nee Richardson to attend Geelong College - the other being Joseph Hewison (1867-1923) later, Mayor of St Kilda.

The following obituary was published in Memoirs of Ministers and Missionaries in England in 1939:
'Hewison, Benjamin was a native of Australia and spent most of his life in the service of the Baptist Churches of the Commonwealth. He was born at Geelong, Victoria, in May 1875, and his early religious training was received in the Aberdeen St Baptist Church, Geelong. He was educated at Geelong College, and commenced his career as a tutor on a sheep station in the heart of New South Wales. Hearing the call to the ministry, he entered the Baptist Theological College of Victoria during the principalship of Dr W T Whitley. On the completion of his theological studies, he served the Churches at Kerang and Williamstown in Victoria, Peterborough in South Australia, and Northcote, a suburb of Melbourne.

Responding to the challenge of the far north, Mr Hewison became pastor of the Jirch Church, Brisbane, and then for nine years was home mission superintendent for the Baptist Union of Queensland. In 1932-33 he was president of the Queensland Baptist Union. Seeking respite from his incessant labours, he came to England for a holiday and, after a short period as supply pastor to many churches, he settled at Grays Tabernacle, in 1935, where he ministered for three happy and fruitful years until his translation on 13th October, 1938. He left a widow, a daughter and a son to mourn his loss. Many will remember him as an acceptable preacher, a devoted pastor, a wise administrator, a trusted leader, a loyal friend.'
