HOOPER, George Arthur Ashby ‘Jim’ (1933-2021)

George ‘Jim’ Hooper was born in 1933 to Ashby AW Hooper (OGC 1911) and Lydia Tempest Rich of Elizabeth Bay, Sydney. He was enrolled as a boarder at The Geelong College in 1943, beginning in the Preparatory School. His parents were living in Toorak, Melbourne.

Jim spent 9 years at the college, finishing Form VI in 1952. He was involved in sports and the cadets over his time here. His sports house was Shannon and he became its vice captain in 1952. He also was given the position of Senior House Prefect in 1952. In his final year he was seat 2 in the 2nd VIII rowing crew and named one of the most consistent players in the 2nd XVIII.

After matriculating, Jim went through Longerenong Agricultural College, near Horsham. He graduated with first class honours. After graduating he spent some time on a farm at Woolsthorpe before joining the Irrigation Branch of the Victorian Department of Agriculture.

This position prompted Jim to travel overseas to England, Europe and the US. Whilst also sightseeing, he studied irrigation, pollution and drainage. After returning home to Victoria, he started working for James Hardie P/L where he stayed for 32 years in a variety of roles and companies.

Jim was on the inaugural Agricultural Technologists of Australasia committee and board when it formed in 1966. He remained active with the organisation throughout his life including after it merged to become the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology. Jim was made a Life Member of the Institute in 2019.

Jim was married to Linley and they have two children and four grandchildren. His brother Brigadier John Hooper also attend the college, OGC 1943.

Jim passed away 29 June 2021, aged 87 years.
