JOHNS, Graham William (1934-2021)

JOHNS, Graham William (1934-2021)

Graham was born in 1934 to Keith and Nellie Johns of Osbourne St, Northcote. The family relocated to Geelong, and Graham was enrolled at The Geelong College in 1945 when the family was living in Herne Hill. He had previously attended Newtown State School.

Graham began in Form UIVB. He was third in his class in 1947 and came 5th in Remove in 1948. He left in 1949, having completed Form IVA but would maintain a lifelong connection to the school.

Graham went on to become an accountant. The Pegasus reported in June 1961 that he was the “the first Australian to win the coveted A. E. Spackman Memorial Prize, awarded by the Amalgamated Institute of Secretaries. He received the highest marks for his three Secretarial papers.” The previous year he had been admitted as a partner in the Geelong firm of chartered accountants David, David & Gray. Soon after, with Geoff Nielson merging his business, Day Neilson Jenkins and Johns was created.

John married Lesley Nicholls in 1958 and they have four children including Heather OGC 1977 (dec), Wendy, Michael OGC 1982 and Lisa OGC 1990.

Graham served for many years as the Old Geelong Collegians Association Honorary Auditor and outside of work was active in the community and church.
Graham passed away 16 August 2021 aged 87 years.
