JOHNSON, Neil Laing, (1893-1964)
Neil Johnson was born at Footscray on 2 October 1893, the son of John Currie Johnson and Flora nee McInnes. He was enrolled by Mrs Johnson as a day student in 1908 and his entry address was 29 Pevensey Crescent, Geelong. He left the School in 1912 at the end of his year in Form VA. He rowed (No 3) in the Senior Fours at the College Rowing Regatta in 1910 and in 1912 (No 3). In 1912, he was initially selected for the 1st VIII but did not appear in the final selection.
He enlisted in the AIF as a Private with the 10th Reinforcements, 8th Battalion on 21 (28) July 1915 but was discharged at Broadmeadows on 3 August 1915 due to chronic synovitis of the knee joint which he stated was caused by an injury he received playing football at school three years earlier. He described his occupation then as labourer.
After the war he became a farmer. Neil Johnson married Ada Williams, daughter of James Daniel Williams and Ada nee Gobbard. His wife gave birth to a son, John Currie Johnson, on 29 November 1917. A daughter, Lois Ailsa Johnson was born in 1929.
Neil Johnson died, age 70 years, at Camberwell, Victoria on 1 August 1964.
