JOHNSTONE, John Nicol (1892-1935)
John Nicol Johnstone was born on 8 October 1892, the son of Thomas William Johnstone and Amy Frances nee Benallack. He was enrolled as a boarder at Geelong College in 1908. His address at enrolment was Murray St, Colac.
He was awarded the following prizes in 1908:
1908 2nd, Algebra, Middle 4th Form.
1908 2nd, Geometry, 3rd Form.
1908 2nd, Scripture, Upper 4th Form.
Debating was one of the most popular activites in the early Twentieth Century School and, in 1909, John became Secretary and Treasurer of the Junior Debating Society. He was also a rower (No 2) in the Middle Fours at the College Regatta their boat winning their heats but narrowly being beaten in the final deciding race.
He was working as a clerk when he enlisted (No 28649) in the AIF on 6 May 1916. He embarked on HMAT A38 Ulysses on 25 October for France with 10th Field Artillery Brigade; 7th Reinforcement Group. John Johnstone served in France as a gunner until his return to Australia, taking leave to England in December 1917 and March 1919, after suffering from enteric (typhoid) fever. He concluded the war attached to the Australian General Base Depot. He returned to Australia on HMT Persic, embarking on 13 September 1919.
In 1924, he married Evelyn Mary nee Burrows.
John Johnstone died in a Private Hospital in Hawthorn, Victoria aged 42, on 4 February 1935, and was buried in his home town of Colac where he had been employed as an agent.
