JONES, John Dyson (1896-1975)


John Dyson Jones was born on 15 December 1896, the son of Benjamin Jones and Agnes Alice nee Grimes. He attended Melbourne Grammar School from 1909 to 1911 before his enrolment as a boarder at Geelong College in March 1912. He was entered by Mrs Jones and their address at the time was 23 Claremont Ave, Malvern. He may have left in 1913.

He described himself as a farm hand when he enlisted (No 329) as a Private in the 24 Battalion AIF at Broadmeadows on 10 March 1915. He embarked on HMAT A14 Euripides on 10 May 1915 for Egypt, and then for Gallipoli, arriving there on 24 September 1915. He remained on Gallipoli until the Evacuation. He arrived in France in April 1916,

Pegasus of December 1916 reported:
'J D Jones wrote from France on September 1st. He was at that time attached to the medical officer in a village in rear of the fighting line, but expected soon to be face to face with the enemy.'

Jones took part in operations with his battalion until the Armistice, being promoted Corporal on 15 February 1917. He married a 24 year old widow Maud Lucy Gibbons in London on 1 August 1919 and returned to Australia on the HT Benalla embarking later that year on 25 November 1919. John Jones was discharged on 23 February 1920.

John Dyson Jones died in Sydney, NSW on 24 July 1975.
