KANE, Neil Herman (1927-1997)


Neil Kane, born at Maryborough on 17 July 1927, was enrolled as a boarder at Geelong College in Calvert House from 8 February 1945 to December 1945. He had previously been at Maryborogh High School and his address at enrolment was 1 Alma St, Maryborough.

Despite his relatively short period at the College, Neil rapidly demonstrated his sporting prowess in a variety of sports, including the 1st Football XVIII of 1945 and as Captain of the Athletic Team in 1945.

At the Geelong College Inter-House and Championship Sports on Saturday 20 October 1945 in the Open events, Neil won the 100 yds, the Broad Jump and came 3rd in the Weight Putt earning him overall victory in the Geelong College Cup for 1945. Pegasus noted his victory in the 100yds Open sprint commenting that 'Kane managed to stagger down the track to win the 100 yards open in 10 min 7 secs.' At the Combined APS Sports that year ' Kane with 21ft 8 7/8ins established a new College record in the long jump.' He also came 2nd in the 100 yds.

In 1949, Pegasus noted that 'Neil Kane played for the Maryborough football team which won the premiership in the Ballarat district league.' .
