LEVY, Austin (1899-1952)


Austin Levy was born on 18 August 1899, the son of Aaron Levy and Adelaide nee Saqui. His attestation papers list his birthpkace as Perth, WA. His parents later were recorded at 'The Nook', Barkly Street, St Kilda though his father was recorded in 1917 at 'Riverside Mansions', Rangoon, Myanmar.

Austin was educated at Melbourne Grammar Preparatory School, Geelong Grammar School, and then enrolled as a boarder at Geelong College in February 1911. At College, he became a member of the Athletics Team of 1914 and 1915 and the 1st Football Team of 1915. He left in August 1916.

During World War I, he enlisted (No 1793) in the AIF on 8 January 1917 as a 2nd Air Mechanic with the Australian Flying Corps (AFC). He embarked on HMAT A74 Marathon on 10 May 1917. He had stated that he had served 2 years in the senior cadets possibly at Geelong College.

The Pegasus of August 1918 noted his work:
'I am motor-cycling from daylight to dark, doing despatch work; although the hours are long and the distances great, one can’t growl when one is safe in England.'

He went with the AFC to France, there he transferred to the 6th Mechanised Transport Company. He returned to Australia in October 1919, and was discharged the following month.

In 1927, he was noted at 'Famous Lasky Film Services' in Brisbane and is pictured in 1950 as the manager of RKO Radio Pictures giving a sick child, Rosemary O'Shea, a Disney watch promised to her by Walt Disney as part of a previous radio station 3DB Children's Hospital Easter appeal.

He died at his home 7 Lorac Avenue, Brighton on 28 March 1952.
