MACLEAN, Norman Arthur (1891-1933)
Norman Arthur Maclean was born at Randwick, NSW, the son of Mordaunt Leyburn Maclean and Letitia Mary nee Stanger-Leathes. There is no enrolment record for him at Geelong College though he is recorded in the 1909 Valette list as of Form VA and was a member of the 1st Cricket XI in 1907 and 1908. He also appears in the Annual Report Prize Lists as follows:
1906 - 2nd, Algebra, Lower 4th Form;
1906 - 2nd, French, Lower 4th Form;
1906 - 2nd Boarders Scripture, Middle Division;
1907 - 1st, Sloyd,;
1908 - 2nd Gymnastics, 4th Class.
Pegasus in 1909 noted that Norman was at Hawkesbury Agricultural College.
During World War I, Norman enlisted (No 1032) as a Private in the AIF on 8 February 1916, embarked on RMS Morea on 27 May 1916, and served in Egypt with the 11th Light Horse. He transferred to the 1st Anzac Battalion, Imperial Camel Corps, on 25 January 1917. While in Egypt he suffered the ravages of sand and disease, suffering numerous attacks of malaria — in November 1917, June and December 1918, and January 1919. He returned to Australia on HMT Euripides, embarking from Kantara on 16 March 1919.
He is believed to have worked as a Station Overseer after the war.
He died on 9 March 1933.
His name is honoured on the Geelong College Great War Memorial Tablet and on the Turramurra War Memorial. His brothers, Harold Alfred Maclean (1884-1970); Alister Grant Maclean, MC (1888-1965); and Allan Kenneth Maclean (1893-1969) all attended Geelong College.
