MEAKIN, Allen Ingram (1895-1973)
Born 31 October 1895, Allen Ingram Meakin was the son of Russell Ingram Meakin and Sarah Ann nee Ware. Russell Ingram later re-married to Bertha Matilda Kaufmann who is described as his mother on his death certificate.
Allen Ingram was enrolled at Geelong College in 1908 leaving in 1911. His address at entry was 34 Virginia Street, Newtown, Geelong.
He served in 70th Infantry ‘Ballarat Regiment’ prior to enlistment (No 1981) during World War I on 21 May 1915. He embarked for Egypt with 22 Battalion (8th Reinforcement Group) on HMAT A68 Anchises on 26 August 1915, and then Gallipoli, where he transferred to 2nd Divisional Signalling Company. He was hospitalised suffering from dermatitis on the 2 December 1915, at Heliopolis and Ras-el-Tin Convalescent Camp. When the Gallipoli campaign ended he went to France, embarking from Alexandria on 16 March 1916, and served throughout the Great War. He took leave to London from 9 to 20 October 1917, and 21 August until 8 September 1918. He returned to Australia as a Lieutenant, embarking on 13 April 1919 on HMT Wyreema.
Allen Ingram Meakin died on the 20 May 1973 in Geelong.
His son, William Darrell Meakin (1935-2016), was also educated at Geelong College.
