RL Moore, First VIII 1954


Roger Moore was born in 1939 to Harry (professional golfer) and Mavis of Geelong. He was enrolled at The Geelong College from 1949, starting in Form UIVB (current day Year 6).

When Roger entered Senior School, Roger was a key member of the rowing crews, from cox in the 2nd VIII in 1953 and 1st VIII in 1954, to stroke in the 5th VIII in 1955. He received a number of colours for rowing including Morrison House and School Rowing Colour, as well as rowing cap in 1954 and 1955. Roger was also in the U16 football team in 1954 and 1955, serving as vice-captain in his final year.

Roger completed his Leaving Certificate and left in Term I 1956.

Roger would go onto have an influential career in rowing as coach, administrator and commentator. He was senior coach at Monash and Victoria Universities, winning Intervarsity and Kings Cup on multiple occasions. When relocating to South Australia as Marketing Manager for Coopers Brewery he joined the Adelaide University Boat Club in the early 1970s. He also coached at Pembroke School. He was a Councillor and Board member of Rowing Australia, as well as a national selector.

In Melbourne Roger worked at Data Control and transferred to Adelaide in 1963. After a time in London he returned with wife Helen to Sydney. After another move to Melbourne roger was appointed at marketing manager at Coopers Brewery and moved to Adelaide in the 1970s. Roger and Helen later worked together as restaurateurs and wine merchants.

Roger passed away 9 November 2020, aged 81 years. He is survived by his wife Helen and family.
