MORETON Dr Arthur Roberts (1901-1964)

Arthur Moreton (Football 1917).Dr Arthur Roberts Moreton was one of four brothers who attended Geelong College. He was born on 14 April 1901, the youngest son of Dr Frederick Moreton and his wife Mary nee Jarvie. He attended the Flinders National School before becoming a day student at Geelong College from February 1911 to December 1918. At College, he played in the 1st Football Teams of 1916 and 1917 and was a member of the College Athletic Teams of 1914 and 1915. He also rowed (bow) in the 2nd rowing VIII in 1917.

His son, J Moreton described him: 'Arthur Moreton matriculated and went to Melbourne University to study Medicine. His father, who was a physician did not get a good all-round education, so my father did a Bachelor of Arts and then his medical course. Following this marathon he signed on as a ship's doctor and sailed to Europe for the princely income of one shilling. He worked in a hospital in London for a couple of years and then came home.

He was one of the foundation graduates in Radiology from Melbourne University and set up his practice at 6 Ryrie St Geelong. For many years, it was the only Radiology practice in Geelong. During World War II there was a shortage of doctors in Geelong and in addition to his own practice he worked at Geelong Hospital, was Medical Officer at Geelong Prison, and Medical Officar at an army hospital on the Bellerine Peninsula.'

His three brothers, Frederick Ewart Moreton (1892-1978); Archibald Herbert Moreton (1894-1915) +; and Cecil Knight Moreton (1895-1973) all attended Geelong College as did two of his four children.
