MORETON, George Victor (1891-1959)
George Moreton was born on 21 April 1891 at Brim, the son of John Knight Moreton and Emily Boswell nee Hewitt. He was enrolled at Geelong College in 1906 with an address of 'Ballangeich', Drysdale.
He enlisted (No 1170) in the AIF on 2 August 1915, and embarked with 13th Light Horse Regiment for France on SS Hawkes Bay on 26 October 1915, where he transferred to the 6th Reinforcement Group, 24 Battalion on 23 September 1917. He took leave to England late in January 1918. He was wounded in action remaining on duty on 1 September 1918. His records indicated the awarding of the Military Medal, but the award did not appear in the London Gazette. He returned to Australia, embarking on 13 April 1919 on HT Castalia. He again served in World War II as a private with the AIF. His memorial at Lake Bolace Cemetery recorded 'Husband of Florence, father of Marion, Honor, Gwenda & Joan MM 1170 Lance Corporal 24 Battalion.'
An obituary was published in Pegasus in June 1960 'George Victor Moreton entered at the College in 1906, died on December 8, 1959, at the age of 68 years. He served with the AIF in France during the first World War, but for the greater part of his life was engaged in farming at Lake Bolac. He was keenly interested in the welfare of his home district, holding office in the Presbyterian Church and the Bush Nursing Centre, and taking an active part in sport.'
His brothers, Stanley Herbert Moreton (1893-1978) and Frederick Hewitt Moreton (1901-1983) were also educated at Geelong College.
