MacDONALD, William Stevenson, (1894-1975)
William Stevenson MacDonald was born at Warracknabeal on 13 May 1894, the son of the Reverend Alexander MacDonald and Susannah nee Stevenson. He was enrolled at Geelong College as a boarder in 1909. His address at the time was Alexandra, Victoria.
During World War I, he enlisted (No 6641) at Liverpool, NSW, in the AIF on 27 April 1915, embarked for Egypt with 8th Field Ambulance, 8th Infantry Brigade. Six officers and 156 other ranks embarked on HMAT A11 Ascanius on 10 November 1915, and one officer and fifty other ranks embarked on HMAT A58 Kabringa on 8 November. He served with his unit as a Private, in Egypt, at Serapeum, Tel el Kebir and Ismailia, then embarked for service with the BEF on 17 June 1916 on HMT Transylvania. Wounded in action, suffering a gunshot wound to the shoulder on 12 May 1917, he was evacuated to England on 19 May. On his release from hospital, he was on furlough for a fortnight in mid-1917. He he returned to France on 8 October, rejoining 8th Field Ambulance. He suffered gas burns on 2 June 1918, and was evacuated by HS Warilda to Middlesex War Hospital on 14 June 1918. William MacDonald returned to Australia as Nursing Staff on HMT Czar, embarking on 23 March 1919.
He died on 17 July 1975.
