McCANN, Albert Arthur (1899-1972)
Albert McCann was born 2 October 1899, the son of Clarence Newham McCann and Grace nee Marendez. He was enrolled as a day student at Geelong College on 11 February 1913 departing in August 1914. He was enrolled by J N McCann and his address was given as Kardinia St, Geelong. He had previously attended Waurn Ponds State School.
During World War I, he enlisted (No 57445) in the AIF on 27 April 1918 as a General Service Reinforcement, 4th Australian Light Horse. His occupation was listed as horse driver and he served as both a driver and trooper. He embarked for France, and subsequently returned to Australia, embarking on 15 June 1919 on HMT Essex.
The Australian War Memorial (AWM) Collection holds a photo of members of the 4th Light Horse Regiment, AIF, saluting during the march past on Anzac Day 1928, including A Bond, Rankin, Locke, R Taggart, W A S Dunlop, Private Albert McCann, O’Hare, Gooding, Courtney, McKenzie, and Price.
Albert McCann died in Geelong in 1972.
