McCANN, Rodney (1945-2003)


Rodney McCann, engineer and popular president of the Geelong College Parents’ and Friends’ Association, was a fifth generation descendant of the local pioneering McCann family which arrived at Geelong in 1841. His great-grandfather founded the Australian Portland Cement Company in 1890 and his grandfather and father also served as chairmen of the company.

‘Rod’ grew up on the family property, Woolbrae at Mt Duneed and attended Geelong College from 1949 to 1962. He went on to study at the Gordon Institute and Footscray Technical College graduating in Mechanical Engineering in 1967 and then first worked with Vickers-Ruwoldt until 1971 before moving from 1971 to 1975 to Mt Isa Mines, subsequently to Australian Cement at Kandos Cement, NSW from 1975 to 1979, Australian Hardboards, Bacchus Marsh from 1979 to 1984 before returning to Geelong in 1985 as head of Pilkington Glass’s automotive division. In 1999, he and his wife Phyllida established a gift business and in 2000 he became involved in the Batesford Limestone quarry.
