McCORMICK, Matthew Stephen John (1886-1941)

Matthew Stephen John McCormick was born in 1886 at Dean, the son of Thomas McCormick and Henrietta nee Nearon.

There is no enrolment record for him nor does he appear in the Annual Report prize lists. His name is listed on the Geelong College memorial tablet to those who served in World War I.

During World War I, he enlisted (No 3404) on 17 July 1915, and embarked for Egypt with 14 Infantry Battalion (11 Reinforcements) on HMAT A71 Nestor on 11 October. In Egypt, he was promoted Bombardier, and embarked on 5 June 1916 for France where he transferred from 12 Field Artillery Brigade to 24 Field Artillery Brigade (24 FAB). He became ill in France, and returned to Australia on HMT Demosthenes, embarking on 27 July 1917.

The Australian War Memorial (AWM) Collection holds a portrait of S J McCormick, one of a series of photographs taken by the 'Darge Photographic Company' which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930’s the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers’ notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or a unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
