McDONALD, Donald Roy, (1893-1965)
Donald Roy MacDonald was born on 9 March 1893, the son of John McDonald and Emma nee Thresher. He became a boarder at Geelong College, enrolling in 1907 and leaving in 1909, His address at enrolment was 'Lachaber', Mortlake.
Prior to his enlistment during World War I on 2 August 1915 in the AIF, he served with the 71st Infantry, Citizens Military Forces. He embarked on HMAT A41 Bakara on 5 November 1915 with the 8th Infantry Brigade Train, 18th Company Army Service Corps for Egypt, where he was promoted to Corporal on 1 March 1916, and then France on 15 June. He became ill there, and was evacuated by HS St George from Rouen on 24 November 1916, to Birmingham War Hospital. He returned to Australia on HMT Borda, embarking on 26 September 1917.
