John McIntyre McDonald, late of Torquay, trained as a forester, and worked for many years with the State Government in conservation and natural resources. He was responsible for training most of the fire situation and planning officers currently employed by the Department of Environment and Primary Industry, and the CFA.

After completing a Diploma in Forestry at the School of Forestry in 1972, he went on to complete a BSc in forestry with the University of Melbourne in 1975, followed by his BA in 1977. He has had postings throughout Victoria including Toolangi, Melbourne, Creswick, Ballarat, Orbost, Bairnsdale and finally Geelong in 2009 where he became manager, fire planning. A specialist in Fire Management and Protection, he assisted with the Aust/NZ fire fighting team in the USA in 2000 and was a vigorous supporter and participant in AusAid projects in India (1999) and the Phillipines (2001).

‘Macca’ was an active, footballer, tennis player, golfer, walker and pianist. He participated in several Great Victorian Bike Rides and, with his daughter, walked the Kokoda Track in 2006. He has been a past president of the Creswick Tennis Club and past Secretary of the Creswick Apex Club. He was a pupil at Inverleigh State School and later, educated as a day student at College from 1964 to 1969, a member of Shannon House and the 1st Football XVIII of 1969. His elder brother, Norman Bruce McDonal also attended College. John died on 9 April 2013.
