McKECHNIE, Clyde Guthrie (1894-1955)


Clyde Guthrie McKechnie was born in 1894, at Hay NSW, the son of William McKechnie and Mary nee Guthrie, of Spring Hill, Fenton’s Creek. He was educated at Wedderburn State School and Geelong College where he was enrolled as a boarder in February 1912, departing in December that same year. His address at enrolment was listed as ' Nap Nap', Hay, NSW.

During World War I, Clyde McKechnie enlisted (No 2960) in the AIF on 29 February 1916, embarked from Sydney with the 15th Reinforcement Group on HMAT A25 Anglo-Egyptian on 19 September 1916, and arrived in Suez on 24 October 1916. He was at the School of Instruction at Zeitoun from 3 April until 14 April 1917, and was taken on strength of 6 Light Horse on 26 May, then spent time with the 7th Mobile Veterinary Section in June 1917.

Lance Corporal Clyde Guthrie returned to Australia on HMT Madras, embarking on 28 June 1919.

The Pastoral Review reported his death of 16 April 1955: 'A wide circle of friends learnt with regret of the death of Mr Clyde Guthrie McKechnie as a result of a road accident in Perth on the 16th April a few hours before he was due to leave Australia for a trip with his wife to the United Kingdom and the Continent, returning via Canada and the United States.

Mr McKechnie, who was born at Hay, N.S.W., in 1894, was educated at Geelong College. He joined the Australian, Mercantile, Land and Finance Co. Ltd. as a jackeroo in 1913, and in 1924 was appointed manager of Maneroo Station in the Longreach district of Queensland. In 1936 he was transferred to Sydney as assistant pastoral inspector, and took charge of that section of the company's business in January 1944. He had been with the A.M.L. and P. Co. Ltd. for 42 years, including 31 years' service with the Light Horse and in the first World War.

Mr McKechnie, who was well-known in pastoral circles throughout a wide area of the Commonwealth, leaves a widow and two sons.'
