McKECHNIE, John Norman (1896-1956)


Born in 1896, John Norman McKechnie was the son of John McKechnie and Marion nee Grant. He was educated at Antwerp State School before becoming a boarder at Geelong College from February 1912 to December 1912. His address at enrolment was 'Spring Hill', Fenton's Creek, Victoria.

During World War I, he served as a Private, enlisting (No 1370) in the 39 Battalion (D Company) AIF on 18 March 1916, and embarking on HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. He was wounded in action in France, suffering a gunshot wound to the right buttock on 8 January 1917, being evacuated by HS Jan Beydel on 10 February to 3rd London General Hospital. He returned to Australia on HMT Suevic, embarking on 27 September 1917.

He died at Camperdown on 7 January 1956.
